I will be extraordinary. Nothing less.
For #SixWordStories' Self-Portrait Mini-Contest

For so long I was set on being a business major. It promised the quintessential American dream. But that dream sucks. Why lock yourself in a cubicle, working on the pitiful, medial concept of wealth for the rest of your life? Why resign yourself to droning away, humming low like the machine you would become?

Go for what you love. Life's too short to do anything less. If you want it bad enough, it will happen. And if it hasn't happened, there is a part of you that does not want it.

Filing through the list of new art seen through words in my inbox I happened to stumble into this little six word story. I could not help but stop and stare for a moment at the simple collection of six small words that shout so clearly a message that so many have failed to convey in thousands.

Perhaps I am bias: this is strikingly similar to one of my own chosen ideals. But, I love this message. It's a shout out to the world to live life, be extraordinary and to never stop. This is your mission. Remembering that this is different than asking for perfection.

It may not be an original idea, but it one that I have not seen portrayed this well in quite some time. Yes, it is edging towards being idealistic but is still has a few steps left to go and that difference is noticeable. Instead of asking the impossible, this asks to be interpreted by its readers and taken any way they see fit. Also a great self portrait!

Also, I would like to remind readers the skill it takes to capture so much in six short words. Every word matters, the position, the way it appears and remembering each separate meaning any reader can take from any combination of words. The last two words in this are somewhat weaker than the original body equipped with the title, and if I were lucky enough to sprout this idea I would have arranged it differently. Perhaps like this: "Life's Mission: to be Extraordinary. Period." But, despite that I still love the author's telling.

This all pretty much sums up to this: I'm impressed. This small piece shows the beginnings of a fine writer, and though it is not perfect, it is extraordinary.
